Greek Asylum Case Law Report: Five years of support to the legal community on refugee protection

The latest issue of the Greek Asylum Case Law Report is released five years since independent organisations Greek Council for Refugees (GCR), HIAS Greece and Refugee Support Aegean (RSA) took the initiative to collect and disseminate Greek jurisprudence on refugee protection.

In these past five years, we have collected and published excerpts of 790 asylum decisions issued by Greek courts and administrative bodies from 2020 to 2025, drawn from our casework and from valuable contributions of civil society organisations and practitioners in the area of asylum. The Greek Asylum Case Law Report has thus contributed to filling important gaps in the availability of Greek case law on asylum and to informing the legal and broader community of refugee law developments in the country.

All issues of the Greek Asylum Case Law Report are publicly available. Cooperation with reputable case law databases such as ISOKRATIS, NOMOS and the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) Case Law Database has allowed us to strengthen dissemination and accessibility of the case law to broader audiences in Greece and beyond.

Issue 2/2025 of the Greek Case Law Report compiles excerpts from 72 decisions by administrative, civil and criminal courts, the Independent Appeals Committees and the Asylum Service, issued mainly in the second half of 2025. These decisions cover topics such as assessment of credibility and of the merits of asylum applications, nationality determination of people seeking asylum, the criminal treatment of refugees, and immigration detention.

We thank civil society organisations METAdrasi – Action for Migration & Development, Equal Rights Beyond Borders, Equal Legal Aid (ELA), European Lawyers in Lesvos (ELIL), ARSIS – Association for the Social Support of Youth, Refugee Legal Support (RLS), Legal Centre Lesvos and The HOME Project, as well as lawyers of the Asylum Service Registry of Lawyers for their contributions of decisions drawn from their casework.
