Refugee Support Aegean (RSA) completes registration on the NGO Registry

The Special Secretariat for Stakeholder Coordination at the Ministry of Migration and Asylum approved through Decision No 235976/28.04.2022 the registration and certification of Refugee Support in the Aegean (RSA) on the NGO Registry of the Ministry.

RSA submitted a new application for registration on 26 February 2022, following the rejection by the Special Secretary of its initial application to the NGO Registry on 25 October 2021, citing that the “development of activity” “in support of persons under deportation” is contrary to Greek legislation. This decision was considered wrong and unlawful amongst others by the Greek Ombudsman intervening in line with his mandate, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders, as well as by civil society organizations active on refugee issues in Greece.

The new application of RSA was accepted by the Ministry, without any amendment of the organization’s statute. RSA provided the clarifications that it had also submitted at the previous application review stage.

RSA recalls that the compatibility of the legal framework of the Registry of NGOs (JMD 10616/2020) is being examined in the context of applications for judicial review lodged with the Council of State, including by RSA. The cases are expected to be heard in the Plenary Session of the Court on 2 December 2022.
