style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Greek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.sg.gov.tr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Turkish<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Coast Guards, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/gr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNHCR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), publications by Greek and international media, as well as the records of the International Organization for Migration\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missingmigrants.iom.int\/project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missing Migrants Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alarmphone.org\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alarm Phone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aegeanboatreport.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aegean Boat href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/en\/at-least-69-refugees-dead-and-59-missing-in-28-shipwrecks-in-greece-in-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are the corresponding figures we had recorded for 2024.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ce6a34 e-con-full Aegean, 11 in the South Aegean, and 3 near Crete.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The largest number of fatal incidents was recorded in the maritime areas of Lesvos (7) and Farmakonisi (5). The fourth quarter of the year saw the highest number of incidents and victims. The shipwreck off Ierapetra, with 17 people dead and 15 missing, stands out as one of the most devastating incidents in Greek waters in recent years. Furthermore, at least <\/span><b>18 women and 10 children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were recorded as dead or missing.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-35cba45 elementor-widget elementor-widget-html\" data-id=\"35cba45\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"html.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/28025094\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/28025094\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-178f0cf elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"178f0cf\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, we recorded <\/span><b>23 bodies that were found without being linked to a specific shipwreck or incident<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and are therefore not included in the above figures. Many of the bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification of these people extremely difficult.<\/span><\/p><p><b>On the Turkish side of the Aegean, we documented at least 53 dead and 3 missing persons in 10 incidents. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The publication of official Turkish data is complex, meaning that the figures presented here are not exhaustive.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Overall, excluding individual bodies that could not be linked to a specific incident, <\/span><b>at least 154 people lost their lives or remain missing in 2025 in 38 fatal incidents on both sides of the Aegean and in the wider area of Crete.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8c14815 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"8c14815\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div require independent investigation as potential human rights violations and acts of violence at the borders.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-33f1518 e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"33f1518\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div According to reports by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and the International Organization for Migration (indicatively <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iom.int\/news\/iom-spokesperson-hundreds-feared-missing-or-dead-amid-reports-shipwrecks-central-mediterranean\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2024-06\/2023%20UNHCR-IOM%20Joint%20Annual%20overview_20240610.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><b>the actual number of dead and missing in the Mediterranean is likely higher<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as many shipwrecks go unreported or are never detected, particularly in the Central Mediterranean. Furthermore, shipwrecks along this route often have an extremely high death toll because they occur in open sea. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/missingmigrants.iom.int\/region\/mediterranean?region_incident=All&amp;route=3891&amp;year%5B%5D=15741&amp;month=All&amp;incident_date%5Bmin%5D=&amp;incident_date%5Bmax%5D=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recorded<\/span><\/a> <b>197<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people dead or missing in <\/span><b>17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fatal incidents in the maritime areas of<\/span><b> eastern Libya and Egypt<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5839d9f e-con-full e-flex e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"5839d9f\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0582a81 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0582a81\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Selected fatal shipwrecks in 2025<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2f5002f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2f5002f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.in.gr\/2025\/03\/22\/greece\/nayagio-metanastes-sto-farmakonisi-enas-nekros-kai-dyo-paidia-se-krisimi-katastasi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22 March<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, at Farmakonisi, a man and two children were pulled from the water unconscious; the children were revived thanks to the immediate provision of first aid. On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsyn.gr\/ellada\/koinonia\/477063_nekros-o-7hronos-prosfygas-poy-agnoeito-sto-farmakonisi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26 June<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the body of a 7-year-old refugee who had been missing for three days following a shipwreck near Farmakonisi was found by the Turkish Coast Guard on the Turkish coast; the official identification process is still ongoing with the support of RSA. On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.neakriti.gr\/kriti\/hania\/2147936_se-exelixi-oi-ereynes-gia-toys-agnooymenoys-anoihta-tis-gaydoy-symmetehei\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11 November<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in a shipwreck near Gavdos, three bodies, one woman and two men, were recovered, while at least thirteen people remain missing. A shocking video circulated showing people calling for help immediately before their boat sank in the presence of a vessel of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex), which had approached the scene to provide assistance. On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.avgi.gr\/koinonia\/515225_diakinitis-petaxe-sti-thalassa-37-atoma-ena-12hrono-paidi-diamelistike-apo-tin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8 December<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 12-year-old boy was killed after being struck by a boat propeller in Samos. On <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcg.gr\/el\/epikairothta\/entopismos-38-allodapwn-kai-ereynes-pros-entopismo-1-agnooymenoy-sto-farmakonhsi-entopismos-38-allodapwn-sto-farmakonhsi-diakomidh-as8enoys\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25 December<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a minor girl went missing and was never found following an incident at Farmakonisi.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A particularly emblematic case was <\/span><b>the shipwreck of <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/el\/lesvos-tafes-thymaton-nayagiou\/\"><b>3 April 2025<\/b><\/a><b> off Skala Sykamnias, Lesvos<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where seven people lost their lives, including three women and three children. From the following day, RSA undertook the representation of most of the survivors and of the victims\u2019 families, coordinating communication with the competent authorities in order to enable the identification and burial of the deceased, a process which, for some, lasted three months. As noted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/el\/lesvos-tafes-thymaton-nayagiou\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Efi Latsoudi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, social scientist at RSA:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cBorder policies that kill people come with a heavy toll in human lives. The point is not only to stand by families as they bury their loved ones. The point is what we do to stop burying people.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It should also be noted that on 5 March 2026, the Three-member Felony Appeal Court of the North Aegean <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rsaegean\/posts\/pfbid0it8GCZdzGGvWNPGTCD1KRtQHejjt68z7D2L1v3kWEbgvJ1tFsp8xvddKZoBhHjEJl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>acquitted<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a survivor of this shipwreck. The refugee, who had lost his wife and two-year-old child in the shipwreck, had been accused of unauthorised transportation and causing a shipwreck, as the alleged driver of the boat. He was represented with the support of lawyers from RSA and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/legalcentrelesvos.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Legal Centre Lesvos<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The case once again highlighted the unjust criminalisation of refugee survivors.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, although outside the 2025 timeframe, we cannot fail to mention the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/en\/chios-greece-deadly-tragedy-following-collision-between-coast-guard-vessel-and-boat-carrying-refugees\/\"> <b>deadly tragedy that occurred in Chios<\/b><\/a><b> on 3 February 2026<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, following a collision of a Greek Coast Guard vessel with a boat carrying refugees. Fifteen people lost their lives, and one child remains missing. All survivors sustained serious injuries, with one woman remaining in critical condition. This incident once again raises serious questions about compliance with the duty to search and rescue, and highlights the dangerous consequences of the systematic deterrence practices implemented at are often deprived of fundamental rights<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as the identification and dignified burial of the deceased, the notification of their families, and effective access to justice.
