When the prevailing narrative says that \u201cnow is not the time\u201d to talk about legality, <\/span>exceptions tend to become the rule<\/b>: authoritarianism deepens, rights are systematically violated, and safeguards and oversight mechanisms are undermined (from Trump\u2019s \u201cnearby America\u201d and ICE raids to our own neighbourhoods). In this context, <\/span>the discussion on legality and the Rule of Law is neither abstract nor theoretical. It is absolutely\u00a0 timely and deeply political, precisely at a time when rights violations, tolerated arbitrariness and an absence of accountability are framed as \u201cnormality.\u201d<\/b><\/p>

In <\/span>Greece<\/b>, the erosion of the Rule of Law is long-standing and particularly reflected in cases such as: <\/span>the <\/span><\/i>surveillance<\/i><\/b>\/wiretapping scandal; the deadly <\/span><\/i>Tempi <\/i><\/b>railway crash and the serious indications of a <\/span><\/i>cover-up<\/i><\/b>; the continued de facto policy of violent and forced disappearances of people seeking asylum (<\/span><\/i>push backs<\/i><\/b>); widespread instances of <\/span><\/i>police violence<\/i><\/b>; persistently <\/span><\/i>poor law-making<\/i><\/b> due to overregulation and bad drafting practices; the <\/span><\/i>shrinking of press freedom<\/i><\/b>, SLAPP lawsuits and the concentration of media ownership; <\/span><\/i>opacity <\/i><\/b>and lack of accountability regarding politicians\u2019 asset declarations and gifts; the <\/span><\/i>targeting <\/i><\/b>and <\/span><\/i>criminalisation <\/i><\/b>of civil society; and serious <\/span><\/i>violations of personal data protection<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/i><\/p>

All of the above are interconnected phenomena that form a <\/span>coherent pattern of institutional dysfunction and impunity<\/b>, with severely detrimental consequences for democracy and fundamental rights.<\/span><\/p>

This year, like every year, independent organisations <\/span>HIAS Greece, Refugee Support Aegean (RSA), Vouliwatch, Greek Council for Refugees (GCR), Hellenic League for Human Rights (HLHR), Homo Digitalis, Reporters United<\/b> and <\/span>Solomon <\/b>have submitted our joint report to the European Commission as part of its annual Rule of Law monitoring. Drawing on documented findings and systematic monitoring, we highlight and denounce the <\/span>long-standing and systemic weaknesses of the Rule of Law in Greece<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>

Now, more than ever, <\/b>at a time when institutions are being discredited, when frustration, delegitimisation and distrust prevail in the eyes of society, and when the narrative that <\/span>\u201cnow is not the time to talk about legality\u201d<\/span><\/i> is used to normalise arbitrariness, now, public debate, vigilance and meaningful social scrutiny are an urgent necessity.<\/span><\/p>

Now is the time to speak about legality, to defend the Rule of Law and democracy, and to demand accountability.<\/b><\/p>
