The figures, referring to 31 December 2024, confirm our observations regarding the situation prevailing in refugee camps both on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/en\/refugee-facilities-on-the-aegean-islands\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">islands <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/en\/refugee-camps-in-mainland-greece\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mainland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-600c5b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"600c5b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Capacity &amp; residents in camps<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fc9e353 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fc9e353\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">27,100 people resided in camps managed by the Reception and Identification Service (RIS) of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum at the end of last year. Of those, most (4,416) resided inside \u201csafe areas\u201d of the CCAC on the Eastern Aegean islands under extremely unsuitable conditions contrary to minimum human rights standards, as recently affirmed by an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanrightslp.eu\/post\/samos-ccac-safe-zone-ecthr-grants-interim-measures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interim measures order<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the European Court of Human Rights in a case concerning Samos. Unaccompanied and separated children who have not been appointed a guardian or whose care has not been assigned to a relative on account of serious delays in the workings of the guardianship system remain <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">de facto <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detained inside safe areas. The main camps hosting Syrian nationals were Samos on the island and Koutsochero and Polykastro on the mainland. The figures refer to no more than 8,527 people receiving the allowance, that is 35% of the people who were entitled thereto and who had requested it.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, however, none of the 24,000 people in the camps has received cash assistance over the last seven months of the year, due to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rsaegean.org\/en\/suspension-of-financial-assistance-to-asylum-seekers-in-greece-since-may-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chronic inability<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the Greek state to manage the EU-funded programme and to comply with its legal obligations. A total of 54 doctors were deployed to the total number of RIS camps, marking an increase compared to 29 doctors at the end of June 2024. Yet, against the backdrop of 27,100 residents, this amounts to one doctor for more than 500 people.
