It should also be noted that newcomers on neighbouring islands such as Kastelorizo are also initially transferred to Rhodes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no formal or informal accommodation structure in Rhodes, while the closest infrastructure for asylum seekers\u2019 first reception and identification procedures is on the island of Kos. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ertnews.gr\/perifereiakoi-stathmoi\/notio_aigaio\/th-stamos-sterountai-vasikon-ypiresion-oi-astegoi-prosfyges-sti-rodo-provlimata-stis-domes-ko-lerou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> huge delays in registration, preventing the people\u2019s transfer to Kos, Leros or the mainland. Last week 250 people were transferred from Rhodes to the mainland. According to press publications, between August and the end of October, i.e. in just three months, a total of 7,000 people from Rhodes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aegeanews.gr\/news\/en-dodekaniso\/499609\/7-000-metanastes-metichthisan-apo-rodo-teleftaio-trimino\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have been transferred<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Kos, Leros and Athens. The fact that during winter there is no daily ferry connection from Rhodes to Leros and Kos makes their transfer to the Closed Controlled Access Centres (CCACs) even more difficult &#8211; centres that are already overcrowded since this autumn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Newcomers survive only with the support of volunteers and people of solidarity and a minimal contribution from the Municipality of Rhodes. It is important to underline that, despite the difficult situation of many residents on the island after the summer fires, there is a significant movement of solidarity towards the refugees from local associations and from organisations and movements outside Rhodes.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cd30a44 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cd30a44\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">No state care<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6986066 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6986066\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this week, the UNHCR head in the Dodecanese, Thanos Stamos, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ertnews.gr\/perifereiakoi-stathmoi\/notio_aigaio\/th-stamos-sterountai-vasikon-ypiresion-oi-astegoi-prosfyges-sti-rodo-provlimata-stis-domes-ko-lerou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his concern about the lack of access to essential services and basic goods for dozens of refugees in Rhodes. In early November, the Rhodes Bar Association sent a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodiaki.gr\/article\/503284\/epistolh-toy-dikhgorikoy-syllogoy-rodoy-ston-ypoyrgo-metanasteyshs-gia-th-metafora-metanastwn-kai-prosfygwn-apo-th-rodo-se-yfistamenes-domes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Minister of Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis requesting migrants and refugees\u2019 transfer from Rhodes to existing structures, stressing among other things that newcomers are \u201cexposed, unprotected without any organised care and hospitality\u201d. The letter even refers to young children sleeping in cardboard boxes.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The self-organised citizens&#8217; movement \u201cElafi\u201d, which was created after the summer fires in Rhodes and provides significant assistance to newly arrived refugees as well, reported at the end of October that there was absolutely no state care, while the provisions from the local government were minimal and not even basic sanitary conditions were ensured. In many cases people were forced to use areas around the parks where they slept as latrines, with all the consequences this has both for their own health and for public health.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4d6efae elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4d6efae\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Insufficient food supply from the Municipality of Rhodes<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3b4e95d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3b4e95d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from the significant problem of lack of accommodation, there are also significant issues regarding homeless refugees\u2019 feeding. According to testimonies from solidarity groups, in the autumn the Municipality of Rhodes provided, only after much pressure, the provision of limited portions of food, which were not enough for all the people, while it did not provide staff for the transfer and distribution of the portions, eventually taken over by the solidarity groups. On December 14, \u201cElafi\u201d wrote in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.facebook.com\/story.php?story_fbid=pfbid0C6XFcXnTWeLV5v1yrktvcFQKrWNPyDKDgkwyUtPXaL1HRgCcACCR5vMv12Rd8KuFl&amp;id=61551334286571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding the insufficient number of food portions provided by the Municipality, among other things: \u201cToday, only 50 food portions were provided, while there are at least 130 refugees with many children among them. We call for the umpteenth time the Municipality of Rhodes to take over fully and responsibly the basic feeding of these people (at least one portion per day for each person).\u201d There was also an urgent need for blankets due to the low temperatures. Access to health care is also an important issue. Some pharmacies in Rhodes donated medicines when there was an appeal from solidarity groups. In order to access a doctor, newcomers have to transfer to the hospital by taxi and bus.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5a99ea8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5a99ea8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Refugees in a desperate situation<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b97a0d3 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b97a0d3\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of October, dozens of homeless refugees <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsyn.gr\/ellada\/koinonia\/409625_kratiko-alaloym-me-toys-prosfyges-tis-rodoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to board a passenger ship in order to go to organised structures and submit their asylum claims. According to the publication, refugees were even threatened with a violent pushback by police officers who forced them to leave a park where they were sleeping. This follows an unsuccessful attempt by the authorities to move the refugees to tents in the commercial port in Acadia behind the old slaughterhouses in view of the 28 October parade, until the completion of the procedures required for their transfer. In the end, this transfer was not allowed by the prosecutor of the Rhodes Court, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.efsyn.gr\/ellada\/koinonia\/409625_kratiko-alaloym-me-toys-prosfyges-tis-rodoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underlining<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in her document, among other things, that the temporary solution not only cannot be licensed, but also does not meet basic health and safety standards.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-217d3e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"217d3e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Complaints from local authorities and even the Police<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3d3e6b6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3d3e6b6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Rhodes Hotel Owners Association in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodiaki.gr\/article\/503175\/enwsh-xenodoxwn-rodoy-aparadekth-kai-akrws-ntropiastikh-gia-to-nhsi-mas-h-eikona-poy-epikratei-sto-istoriko-kentro-ths-polhs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early November referred to an \u201cunacceptable and extremely embarrassing image\u201d in the historic centre of Rhodes \u201cwhere hundreds of people and mainly young children are sleeping in parks and pavements\u201d. It even pointed out to those who wondered why hotel owners did not accommodate them in their closed hotels: \u201cThis kind of hospitality is forbidden by law and those hoteliers who dared to do so are now facing justice\u201d. At the same time, the Dodecanese Police Officers&#8217; Union wrote a letter to the Chief of the Greek Police <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodiaki.gr\/article\/503168\/na-analabei-tis-eythynes-toy-o-arxhgos-ths-el-as-zhtoyn-oi-astynomikoi-ths-dwdekanhsoy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> him to take responsibility \u201cfor the difficult situation in the Dodecanese due to the increased migratory flows and the subsequent inability to register, house and transfer these people\u201d. In early November, newcomers staged a protest outside the Rhodes Police Station <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aegeanews.gr\/news\/en-dodekaniso\/499517\/ragdaies-ekselikseis-tous-metanastes-sti-rodo-pragmatopoioun-diamartyria-ekso-apo-astynomiko-tmima-rodou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be registered and to be able to leave the island immediately. There was a strong <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aegeanews.gr\/news\/en-dodekaniso\/499637\/antidraseis-sti-rodo-gia-diloseis-kairidi-oti-metanastes-pou-koimountai-sta-parka-einai-apolymenoi-apo-adiloti-ergasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reaction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Rhodes authorities to a statement by the Minister of Migration and Asylum that migrants sleeping in the parks are dismissed from undeclared work who, after the end of the tourist season, turn up to be registered.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-72e6f98 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"72e6f98\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">No solution for the near future<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-67267b9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"67267b9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to information from \u201cElafi\u201d, on Tuesday the approximately 60 people sleeping in parks were moved to the mainland. Solidarity groups rushed to collect the tents so that they could be used again, not ending up in the garbage. As \u201cElafi\u201d reported in early December, the Municipality tore down tents that had been put up after a donation from a collective and which were the only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodiaki.gr\/article\/504829\/rodos-stoys-dromoys-kai-th-broxh-xana-perissoteroi-apo-70-metanastes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">protection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of homeless refugees from the rain and wind.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Solidarity groups and other actors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rodiaki.gr\/article\/505197\/parembash-toy-thanash-pafilh-sth-boylh-gia-toys-metanastes-sth-rodo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistently ask<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a temporary shelter, for the provision of food and health care for the people, under the responsibility of the government in cooperation with the Municipality and the Region, and for the end of the unacceptable and dangerous living conditions of newcomers. However, despite high arrivals in the Dodecanese, no plans have been made public to solve these problems, while the South Aegean Region&#8217;s Governor <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/aegeanews.gr\/news\/en-dodekaniso\/499637\/antidraseis-sti-rodo-gia-diloseis-kairidi-oti-metanastes-pou-koimountai-sta-parka-einai-apolymenoi-apo-adiloti-ergasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he will not accept any new structure on any island in the region.
